THE RECAP—DECEMBER 2011

I feel like I’ve lost time somewhere in the last month—it felt great not knowing the time or even the day of the week! Now that’s a true vacation. To give you a recap, my parents came to Delhi on December 4th and we’ve had a non-stop party since---all the way to Jan 31st, 2012.

We set out to see the ‘nice’ places in Delhi once the parental-units landed, and if you’ve read my blog before, you’ll probably already know where we took them first: Magique [in the Garden of Five Senses] and Hauz Khas, a very pretty/quirky/artistic area that feels like it’s separated from the rest of the smoggy and gaudy city. There’s this Italian restaurant in Hauz Khas called Amour which is really nice. You can sit out on the roof-top patio, with an amazing view of the tombs and the park.

Hauz Khas

We also went to SET’Z—probably my most favourite restaurant in Delhi for a number of reasons including a) variety and b) best sushi I’ve had in India. Speaking of SET’Z, the chocolate cake/ice-cream dessert is the best dessert I’ve had in India so far. Still doesn’t compare to Joey’s half baked chocolate cake with ice cream, but it’s the closest thing I’ve come across.

And of course, we went to Pandara road for some authentic Indian food which my parents really liked—nothing available in North America remotely compares to the Indian food you get in India! Actually, nothing compares to the food you get in India whether it’s Italian, Thai, or Chinese even…well, all except for Sushi, which seems to be something of a ‘new’ fad here, but is pretty mediocre and expensive compared to the rest of the world.

I have to say, once you’re used to the food in India, food everywhere else feels so bland. Bali, for example, seemed to cater mostly to Australian and European tourists, who it seems, love to have fish and chips and steak…even while on vacation in another country. So every time we went to a restaurant or even ordered in, we’d be like ‘please….EXTRA spicy’ or ‘please…give us some REALLY HOT SAUCE on the side.’ The food in Sri Lanka on the other hand, is super amazing.

For New Years, we were in Hyderabad—where we took a ride on an Indian tractor—which was pretty cool! We then went to Fusion9 for New Years dinner and headed home as we were leaving for Sri Lanka on the 1st [be sure to read the next blog about how the good people at the Chennai International Airport are scandalized for life because I wore shorts]. We had a great few days in Hyderabad, and as always, the food was amazing. Important to note that I hadn’t yet started resembling a pumpkin at this time [though by now, as I've mentioned the word 'food' quite a few times, the whole turning into a pumpkin thing I realize, was inevitable].
